Stainless steel consumption in Russia rises 19%

The year of 2011 was very successful for the Russian stainless steel market. According to a tentative estimate of SpetsStal Association, the aggregate volume of consumed stainless steel products in 2011, on 2010, rose 19% to 371.2 th. tons. At that, the local stainless steel output rose 10.2% to 134.5 th. tons, exports - 33.7% to 7.8 th. tons and imports - 24.7% to 244.5 th. tons.

Practically all product groups demonstrated a robust growth. The consumption of STS flats rose 20.9%, longs - 21.7%, slabs/ingots - 23.0%, welded tubes - 25.5% and seamless tubes - 25.5%.

The beginning of 2012 has been marked with a price hike for stainless steel on the outer markets. No doubt that shortly it is going influence the Russian market considering the big share of STS imports which as a result for 2011 has reached 65.9% (in 2010 - 62.8%).
